風景は何によって、英国的また日本的だと認識されるのだろうか？
地理的な、また人工的な表象物は、日常的には我々の視線の対象となる
ことはない。
本写真展では、どこにでもありながら奇妙にも忘れら れてしまいがちな
視覚文化である「サイン」にピントを合わせて制作された。私、英国の
写真家ジョ ン・トランと筑波大学の西川潔教授とのコラボレーションに
より生まれたこの作品群は、日英の風景写真の中に写りこんだサインや、
その他の視覚文化を入れ替えることにより、文化的に曖昧となった空間
のイメージを展観する写真展である。 John L Tran

□John L Tran 略歴
ジョン・トランは1965年ロンドン近郊St Albansで生ま れ、サセックス大学でIntellectual Historyと
フランス語を専攻した後来日し、数年を関西で過ごした。1994年に英国に帰国しLondon College of
Communicationにて写真の修士号を、続いてChelsea College of Art and Designにて日本の風景写真
の歴史 をテーマに博士号を取得した。現在は講師として筑波大学芸術学系に勤務している。
John L Tran was born in 1965 in St Albans, near London. He studied Intellectual History and French at Sussex University and spent several years in Kansai after graduating. Returning to Britain in 1994 he studied an MA in Photography at the London College of Communication, followed in 2001-2005 by a practice-based PhD at Chelsea College of Art and Design, investigating the history of Japanese landscape photography.
Dr Tran currently works an assistant professor in the faculty of Art and Design, Tsukuba University.
